Languages. Transition and training

For the first time in 2022 we have expanded the diagnostic statements (the old professional judgements) to include languages.

The different sections record the pupil’s ability to apply their knowledge of grammar and phonics. It also includes the simple facility to report the main language taught.

We are delighted that the Primary Languages Network have provided free CPD to all registered schools which is accessible from within the application. It allows primary schools to deliver more informed and consistent decision making and secondary schools to gain greater awareness of Y6 capability.

This new initiative follows a very successful pilot project run with several schools in 2021 in partnership with Suzanne O’Farrell, ASCL’s MFL Consultant and Primary Languages Network.

The need for transition information to support languages teaching has been highlighted by Ofsted (Curriculum research review series: languages – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)) and others. However, as well as providing the secondary schools with information on pupil progress, our diagnostic statements helped to provide a focus for lessons and a framework for assessment within the primary schools.

Suzanne has written more extensively on the importance of transition on the ASCL website. You can view her blog here: ASCL – Modern Foreign Languages: Transition from primary to secondary.
